Google Introduces Gmail Motion!

Desk jockeys will have not excuse for not getting out of their chairs with Google's new Gmail Motion. This system gets you away from the keyboard by using body motions to execute Gmail tasks.

See the video at the Gmail Motion website for a demonstration. For example, to reply to a message, lift your hand and point your thumb behind you. For "reply all," point both hands behind you. What could be easier?

Note: do not try these Gmail Motion commands in certain situations, such as why walking across an airport tarmac to board a plane. Pilots may interpret your motions as directions to them and result in an aircraft accident.

Gmail Motion was announced by Google on April 1st, 2011.

And speaking of April 1st, those folks at Google have added another amusing note to our Internet experience, replacing the traditional YouTube logo with a retro-looking "YouTube 1911" logo. Sometimes it does seem like YouTube has been around since 1911, doesn't it? (Especially when watching some of those laughably dated early-1980s music videos—they really do look like they were made 100 years ago.

Enjoy Gmail Motion and YouTube 1911... I'll make a note here if I come across any other Google April 1st gags.

"Why Won't My Parakeet Eat My Diarrhea?" - Google's Bizarre Search Suggestions

It's been the top search term on Google Trends today. But are there really that many people asking, "Why Won't My Parakeet Eat My Diarrhea?"

The answer seems to be in the search giant's Google Suggest feature, in which you type letters or words into the Google search box in your browser, and Google gives you suggestions based on popular terms that other users have entered. If you start to type in "Why won't...," the parakeet query is one that comes up near the top.

As for the origins of the question "Why Won't My Parakeet Eat My Diarrhea?," it's possible it is a term from a TV show or is some other pop-culture reference. Similarly, if you type in "Why is...," one of the first results that Google offers is "Why is there a dead Pakistani on my couch?" If I recall correctly, this is a line from an episode of "Lost," in which Hurley's mom sees the drugged Sayyid passed out on the sofa in the Reyes home.

Fake Google Results: What Happens in Vegas, Number of Deaths in Rambo, Rick Astley, etc.

A funny collection of oddball Google search results became one of the most popular items on Digg.com today, until it turned out that they were fake results. They're funny nevertheless, and you can see them here. They're a goof on Google's "onebox" results, which summarize the most likely or popular search results in a handy table.

It's meant to be a take-off on other bizarre and/or dumb Google searches, such as "number of horns on a unicorn? (ummm, "uni" means one). Here's a sampling of the "results" listed:

Google search: Things Rick Astley would never do
Results: Give you up, let you down, make you cry, say goodbye

Google search: Number of deaths in Rambo
Results: Rambo: First Blood - 1; Rambo: First Blood Part II - 69, etc.

Google search: What happens in Vegas
Results: Stays in Vegas

Google search: I know kung fu
Results: For the last time, no you don't

Google search: Weeeelllll...
Results: Kyle's Mom's a bitch

What a "Shod Foot" Is - The Term that Sent Millions Googling

Apparently countless people in the U.S. spent part of their work hours today Googling the term "shod foot," which came about because a University of Massachusetts lacrosse player was arrested in a brawl.

Although the brawl involved the use of lacrosse sticks, baseball bats, and bottles, Christian Haggerty was also charged with "aggravated assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (his shod foot) and breaking and entering during the night time," according to Sports Illustrated's Web site. So that sent folks everywhere Googling to see what a "shod foot" was. Well folks, a shod foot is simply a foot that is wearing a shoe. That's it.

"Shod" is defined in one version of the Merriam-Webster dictionary as "Past tense and a past participle of shoe." In other words, a horse that has had horseshoes put on its hooves is a shod horse. Now you don't hear the word "shod" used much regarding people, but hey, the law apparently uses it because, well, I guess because the law was written by lawyers and they like using complex and unusual language when a much simpler usage would be fine.

I'm not sure what made Haggerty's shod foot so deadly... maybe he was wearing steel-toed boots? Or maybe he is also the football team's place kicker? Whatever it is, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has decided his foot-and-shoe combination is a lethal weapon. Of course, if he was a martial arts practitioner, his bare foot could well be considered a deadly weapon.

So that explains all the "shod foot" Googling today. Now I just have to figure out why another one of the top searched-for words of today is "mons pubis" ...
